About Us

Hello! We’re Shane and Shereen Petersen, the creators behind Glacial Gear, now located in the beautiful upstate region of South Carolina, close to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our journey started in the Midwest, where Shereen grew up surrounded by the serene Northwoods of northern Minnesota, just a mile from the Superior Hiking Trail, and Shane spent his life exploring the landscapes of northern Illinois. Our shared passion for the outdoors and hiking has grown over the years, and after raising two kids and watching them step into their own adventures, we found ourselves turning a spare room into a sewing studio, driven by a need to create gear we couldn’t find elsewhere.

Our love for the trail was truly sparked at places like Glacial Park in Richmond Illinois, where we spent years hiking through rolling forests, kames, and along the tranquil Nippersink Creek. It was while backpacking on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Wisconsin that Shane saw the need for a trail towel designed specifically for long-distance hiking. With this in mind, we created the Trail Rag, a Merino wool towel that clips onto your backpacks shoulder strap and is perfect for wiping away sweat and grime in a sustainable, hygienic way.

Over the years we’ve expanded our lineup beyond the Trail Rag to meet more of the needs of our fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Our products, like the Merino Wool Sleeping Bag Liner, are crafted with the same commitment to sustainability and quality, using ethically sourced Merino wool and eco-friendly materials. All our packaging is fully compostable or recyclable, reflecting our dedication to protecting the natural spaces we love.

Whether you’re on a rugged mountain trail or simply enjoying a quiet forest walk, we’re excited to be part of your outdoor journey. Welcome to the Glacial Gear family, and here’s to many happy trails ahead!
