Full product details & care

The Trail Rag Classic is our original merino wool hiking towel, in two sizes for anyone who wants a little more towel. It’s handmade in small batches in Taylors, South Carolina, from premium New Zealand ZQ merino.

It’s where our story began in 2020, and since then Trail Rags have gone along on long-distance trails, weekend trips, road trips and travels abroad. For a bigger towel or our original handmade construction, the Classic is still hard to beat.

Garage Grown Gear, the ultralight backpacking shop, published 24 creative uses for a Glacial Gear Trail Rag by thru-hiker Matthew Kok.

What it’s for

  • Wiping sweat on climbs
  • Drying your face and hands
  • Drying cookware and utensils
  • Cleaning sunglasses and gear
  • Handling hot cookware
  • Freshening up at camp

Why ZQ merino

ZQ is a standard for responsibly sourced New Zealand merino, with an emphasis on quality, animal welfare, environmental responsibility and traceability. The 18.9-micron, 200 GSM fabric is soft against skin, naturally antimicrobial and odor-resistant, and light enough to carry every day.

Choose a size

  • Medium, 14.5 × 10.5 in: 0.9 oz (26 g). Extra surface area while staying light and packable.
  • Large, 16.5 × 12.5 in: 1.0 oz (28 g). Our largest Classic, with the most coverage for drying off, camp cleanup and cookware.

Want something smaller? Our 10 × 10 in Trail Rag (0.7 oz) has rounded corners and a hanging loop. Compare all three in the gear guide →

Where it began

Before anything else, there was the Trail Rag.

In 2020 we set out to make a better hiking towel from merino, and that idea launched Glacial Gear. The Classic keeps the original square-corner build, still handmade in small batches in our Taylors, South Carolina workshop.

It fills a role that hikers and backpackers absolutely need, which would often be filled with bulky pack towels or paper-thin bandanas.
